Memo / destination tag

An extra identifier that some coins, such as XRP and XLM, require alongside the address so the receiving service can assign the deposit to you.

By Sky Trade editorial teamUpdated

On some networks a service uses one shared address for many customers and tells deposits apart by an additional field. XRP calls it a destination tag; Stellar (XLM) calls it a memo; other networks use similar names. The address and the memo together form the full destination.

Forgetting the memo is a common and stressful mistake. The coins reach the right address, but the receiving service doesn't know whose they are, so nothing appears on your balance. Recovery, where possible, means contacting support with the transaction details and waiting for a manual check.

How to avoid it:

  • if an exchange's withdrawal form has a memo or tag field and the recipient gave you one, never leave it empty;
  • copy the memo exactly, just like the address;
  • don't confuse it with a payment note or description field that some apps also offer.

At Sky Trade, XRP and XLM deposits show a memo/tag next to the address, and it must be included. If something goes wrong, the support chat inside the platform can review the case. See how to deposit and the entry on wallet addresses.

Example

Your XRP deposit shows an address starting with “r” and the tag 4815162. On the exchange you paste both; without the tag, the XRP would arrive but would not be credited automatically.
