About AUD/USD
AUD/USD, the aussie, shows how many US dollars one Australian dollar buys: 0.66000 means 1 AUD = 0.66 USD. A pip is 0.0001.
Australia is a major exporter of iron ore, coal and liquefied natural gas, and China is its largest customer. As a result, the aussie is often treated as a proxy for global growth and Chinese demand: Chinese PMIs, trade figures and GDP releases can move AUD/USD even when Australia itself is quiet, and so can sharp moves in metal prices. In calm, optimistic markets the AUD tends to do well; in sell-offs it is usually among the first currencies to fall.
Australian monetary policy is set by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). Watch RBA decisions and statements, Australian employment data and inflation figures, alongside the usual US drivers — Fed decisions, non-farm payrolls and CPI. Unlike the European pairs, AUD/USD has a genuinely active Asian morning, because Australian and Chinese data come out during Sydney and Tokyo hours; it picks up again when New York opens.
AUD/USD OTC on Sky Trade is something else: a price stream generated by Sky Trade's server, available around the clock and unaffected by China, metal prices or the RBA.
How to trade AUD/USD on Sky Trade
- 1Open the terminal and choose the demo account to practise, or the real account if you have deposited.
- 2Pick AUD/USD in the instrument list — the market and OTC versions are listed separately, each with its current payout.
- 3Set the stake and the expiry: a duration (for example 1 minute) or an exact closing time.
- 4Press Buy if you expect the price at expiry to be above the entry price (a “higher” trade), or Sell if you expect it below (a “lower” trade). The payout is fixed at the moment you open.
- 5At expiry the server compares the closing price with the entry price: in your direction — stake plus payout; against you — the stake is lost; exactly equal — the stake is refunded.
Frequently asked questions
What is the payout on AUD/USD at Sky Trade?
The market version of AUD/USD pays 71–83% and the OTC version 84–94% of the stake on a winning trade. The exact value changes slowly over time; the terminal shows it before you open a trade, and it stays fixed for that trade.
When can I trade AUD/USD?
The market version of AUD/USD is available Monday to Friday while the forex market is open and real quotes are arriving. The OTC version is available 24/7, including weekends.
Does AUD/USD OTC follow the real market?
No. The OTC price is generated by Sky Trade's server with a random-walk model and is not taken from any bank or exchange, so it can differ from the real AUD/USD rate at any moment.
What is the minimum stake and expiry for AUD/USD?
The minimum stake is $1 and the maximum is $50,000 (default limits). Expiry ranges from 5 seconds on OTC and 30 seconds on market pairs up to 4 hours.
Why does Chinese data move AUD/USD?
China buys a large share of Australia's exports, especially iron ore. Weaker Chinese activity can mean lower demand and lower prices for those exports, which tends to weigh on the AUD.
Why is the Australian dollar called a risk currency?
It tends to rise when investors are optimistic about global growth and fall when they rush to safety. That makes it sensitive to stock-market mood, although the link is not fixed.
When is AUD/USD most active?
Two windows stand out: the Asian morning, when Australian and Chinese data are released, and the New York session, when US news arrives.
