About USD/CAD
USD/CAD measures how many Canadian dollars one US dollar buys: 1.36000 means 1 USD = 1.36 CAD. If the chart rises, the Canadian dollar is weakening. The pip is 0.0001. Traders call the Canadian dollar the loonie, after the bird on its one-dollar coin.
Canada is one of the world's large oil producers, and most of its exports go to the United States. That makes the loonie sensitive to the price of crude: rising oil has historically tended to support the CAD (pushing USD/CAD lower), falling oil the opposite. The link is real but loose — on many days rate expectations or US data matter more than oil.
The Bank of Canada sets Canadian rates; the Federal Reserve sets US ones. Key releases are BoC decisions, Canadian CPI, GDP and the Labour Force Survey — which is often published on the same morning as US non-farm payrolls, so both currencies can be hit by surprises within the same minute. Weekly US crude inventory data (usually on Wednesdays) and OPEC+ decisions also feed into the pair. Unsurprisingly, the North American session is the most active time for USD/CAD.
USD/CAD OTC on Sky Trade is generated by Sky Trade's server and runs 24/7; oil prices, the BoC and the real loonie have no influence on that chart.
How to trade USD/CAD on Sky Trade
- 1Open the terminal and choose the demo account to practise, or the real account if you have deposited.
- 2Pick USD/CAD in the instrument list — the market and OTC versions are listed separately, each with its current payout.
- 3Set the stake and the expiry: a duration (for example 1 minute) or an exact closing time.
- 4Press Buy if you expect the price at expiry to be above the entry price (a “higher” trade), or Sell if you expect it below (a “lower” trade). The payout is fixed at the moment you open.
- 5At expiry the server compares the closing price with the entry price: in your direction — stake plus payout; against you — the stake is lost; exactly equal — the stake is refunded.
Frequently asked questions
What is the payout on USD/CAD at Sky Trade?
The market version of USD/CAD pays 84–92% and the OTC version 20–94% of the stake on a winning trade. The exact value changes slowly over time; the terminal shows it before you open a trade, and it stays fixed for that trade.
When can I trade USD/CAD?
The market version of USD/CAD is available Monday to Friday while the forex market is open and real quotes are arriving. The OTC version is available 24/7, including weekends.
Does USD/CAD OTC follow the real market?
No. The OTC price is generated by Sky Trade's server with a random-walk model and is not taken from any bank or exchange, so it can differ from the real USD/CAD rate at any moment.
What is the minimum stake and expiry for USD/CAD?
The minimum stake is $1 and the maximum is $50,000 (default limits). Expiry ranges from 5 seconds on OTC and 30 seconds on market pairs up to 4 hours.
Why does oil affect USD/CAD?
Energy is one of Canada's biggest exports, so oil prices affect the country's income and the demand for its currency. Higher oil has tended to strengthen the CAD, but the relationship breaks down regularly.
Why can USD/CAD jump so hard on jobs day?
Canada's Labour Force Survey and US non-farm payrolls are often released at the same time. If one surprises up and the other down, the pair can move sharply in seconds.
Is a rising USD/CAD good or bad for the Canadian dollar?
Bad: the CAD is the quote currency here, so a higher number means one US dollar buys more Canadian dollars.
