Market closed on Sky Trade: why a pair can't be traded right now
Why a market forex pair can't be traded on Sky Trade — weekends, holidays, feed delays — plus the 30-second minimum expiry, unavailable instruments and OTC.
If Sky Trade refuses a trade with "market for this pair is closed", it means one thing: no fresh real quote for that pair has arrived recently. Sky Trade will not let you trade a market pair on a stale price. This page explains when that happens, what the other "can't trade" messages mean, and what your options are.
Market pairs need a live quote
Sky Trade's 21 market forex pairs use real interbank quotes (an OANDA feed delivered via Finnhub). There is no hard-coded trading schedule. Instead, the rule is simple: if no fresh real quote for a pair has arrived for 2 minutes, the pair is refused until quotes start flowing again.
In practice this happens for three reasons:
- Weekends. The forex market is closed from Friday evening to Sunday evening (around the Sydney open), so market pairs are available Monday to Friday. See forex market sessions.
- Holidays. Around major holidays, quoting can thin out or stop for some pairs.
- Feed delays or outages. If the data feed is interrupted, pairs without fresh quotes are refused until it recovers.
The market hours tool shows which forex sessions are open right now in your time zone.
Why not just trade on the last price?
A trade's result is decided by the price at expiry, set by the server. If the quote is stale, nobody — neither you nor the server — knows the real current price, and a trade opened on an old price would be a lottery. Refusing the trade is the fair option. It also matters on Monday morning, when the market can reopen at a different level from Friday's close — see weekend gap.
Minimum expiry on market pairs
Market pairs have a minimum expiry of 30 seconds. The shorter presets (5, 10 and 15 seconds) are available only on OTC instruments. If you cannot select a short expiry on EUR/USD, this is why — not a fault. Choosing an expiry is covered in choosing expiry time.
"Instrument temporarily unavailable"
This is a different case. The administration can temporarily disable an instrument. It is not tied to market hours, and it can apply to OTC instruments too. Usually the fix is to wait or pick another instrument. If an instrument stays unavailable for a long time, you can ask support.
Open trades and pending orders
Trades are opened and closed by the server, at the server's price and time, so an open trade closes at expiry even if you close the tab. Pending orders are different: they run in your browser and trigger only while the terminal tab is open.
The 24/7 alternative: OTC, with an honest caveat
Sky Trade's 38 OTC instruments are available 24/7, including weekends and holidays. You should know what they are before using them:
- OTC prices are generated by Sky Trade's server with a random-walk model, ticking every 0.5 seconds.
- They are not quotes from any exchange or bank, and they do not follow the real market of the same name. "EUR/USD OTC" is not EUR/USD.
- The direction of the next move is unpredictable (50/50). There is no built-in drift against traders, but there is also no news, no economics and no real market behind the price.
- All crypto (BTC, ETH, SOL, BNB) and both indices (INDEX 250, ASIA 200) on Sky Trade are OTC-only.
So switching to OTC on a Saturday is possible, but it is a different kind of instrument, not the closed market by another name. Read OTC explained and see the OTC instruments list.
OTC trading is available around the clock, which makes it easy to trade more than you planned. Trading involves a risk of losing capital, and you can lose the full amount of every trade.
Quick checklist
- Is it the weekend or a public holiday? Wait for the market to reopen, or use the demo to practise.
- Is your expiry at least 30 seconds?
- Does the message say "temporarily unavailable"? Then it is an administrative pause — try another instrument.
- Is your internet connection stable? Reload the terminal and check the chart is updating.
Payout rules for each instrument are explained in payout percentage.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Sky Trade say the market for this pair is closed?
No fresh real quote has arrived for that pair for 2 minutes, usually because of the weekend, a holiday or a feed delay. The pair becomes available again when quotes resume.
Can I trade forex on Sky Trade on weekends?
Market forex pairs are available Monday to Friday while the forex market is open. On weekends only OTC instruments are available, and their prices are generated by Sky Trade, not taken from the real market.
Why can't I set a 5-second expiry on a forex pair?
Market pairs have a minimum expiry of 30 seconds. Shorter expiries are available on OTC instruments only.
What does "instrument temporarily unavailable" mean?
The administration has disabled that instrument for a while. Pick another instrument or try again later.
Does BTC/USD OTC follow the real Bitcoin price?
No. All crypto on Sky Trade is OTC-only, and its price is generated by Sky Trade's server.
