About GBP/JPY
GBP/JPY shows how many yen one British pound buys: 190.000 means 1 GBP = 190 JPY. The pip is 0.01, and the price carries three decimals. Traders nicknamed it the guppy, and some call it the beast — a reputation earned by its wide swings.
The reason is the combination. The pound reacts strongly to UK-specific news: Bank of England decisions, inflation and wage data, politics. The yen reacts to global fear and to the Bank of Japan, whose policy has long kept Japanese rates far below British ones. Put a news-sensitive currency against a safe haven with a large interest-rate gap and you get a pair that can travel a long way when sentiment turns. As a cross, GBP/JPY is also driven indirectly by everything that moves GBP/USD and USD/JPY.
The busiest time is the London session, especially the first hours when Tokyo traders are still active and European desks arrive. Wide ranges cut both ways: they produce clear moves, and they also mean that a short-expiry position can flip from winning to losing within a few ticks. If you are new to this pair, watch it in the demo account for a while before you put real money on it.
GBP/JPY OTC, also available on Sky Trade, is generated by Sky Trade's own server around the clock and moves independently of the real pound-yen market.
How to trade GBP/JPY on Sky Trade
- 1Open the terminal and choose the demo account to practise, or the real account if you have deposited.
- 2Pick GBP/JPY in the instrument list — the market and OTC versions are listed separately, each with its current payout.
- 3Set the stake and the expiry: a duration (for example 1 minute) or an exact closing time.
- 4Press Buy if you expect the price at expiry to be above the entry price (a “higher” trade), or Sell if you expect it below (a “lower” trade). The payout is fixed at the moment you open.
- 5At expiry the server compares the closing price with the entry price: in your direction — stake plus payout; against you — the stake is lost; exactly equal — the stake is refunded.
Frequently asked questions
What is the payout on GBP/JPY at Sky Trade?
The market version of GBP/JPY pays 84–92% and the OTC version 35–94% of the stake on a winning trade. The exact value changes slowly over time; the terminal shows it before you open a trade, and it stays fixed for that trade.
When can I trade GBP/JPY?
The market version of GBP/JPY is available Monday to Friday while the forex market is open and real quotes are arriving. The OTC version is available 24/7, including weekends.
Does GBP/JPY OTC follow the real market?
No. The OTC price is generated by Sky Trade's server with a random-walk model and is not taken from any bank or exchange, so it can differ from the real GBP/JPY rate at any moment.
What is the minimum stake and expiry for GBP/JPY?
The minimum stake is $1 and the maximum is $50,000 (default limits). Expiry ranges from 5 seconds on OTC and 30 seconds on market pairs up to 4 hours.
Why is GBP/JPY so volatile?
It pairs the pound, which is sensitive to UK data and politics, with the yen, which reacts to global risk sentiment, and the two have a large interest-rate gap. When risk appetite changes, that gap amplifies the moves.
Is GBP/JPY suitable for beginners?
A calmer pair is more forgiving to learn on. Large swings make it easy to lose a stake quickly, so practise on demo first and keep stakes small.
Which session is most active for GBP/JPY?
The London session, particularly the early European hours that overlap with the end of the Tokyo session.
