Trading session
The part of the 24-hour forex day when a major financial centre — Sydney, Tokyo, London or New York — is open and active.
The forex market has no single exchange, so its day is divided into sessions named after the centres that dominate them: Sydney, Tokyo (Asia), London (Europe) and New York (the Americas). They overlap, and the overlaps — especially London and New York, roughly 13:00–16:00 UTC — usually bring the most activity.
Each session has its own flavour. The Asian session is often calmer for euro and pound pairs but active for the yen and the Australian dollar. London frequently sets the day's direction for European currencies. New York adds US data releases and can extend or reverse the London move. Late New York into the Asian open is typically the quietest stretch.
The point isn't to memorise timetables but to know in which conditions your method was tested. A range-trading idea that works in a quiet Asian session can fall apart at the London open, while a breakout idea may need exactly that burst.
Session times shift with daylight-saving changes, so check rather than assume. The market hours tool shows the current sessions, and forex market sessions covers them in depth. Sessions don't affect Sky Trade's OTC instruments, which are server-generated.
London opens at 07:00 UTC in winter. EUR/USD, which moved 10 pips in the previous four hours, moves 25 pips in the first hour of the session.
